Novocain, or procaine, is a local anesthetic that works by blocking sodium channels in nerve cells. When these channels are inhibited, the ability of nerves to transmit pain signals to the brain is disrupted. This prevents the sensation of pain from being felt in the area where the anesthetic is applied. As a result, the affected region becomes numb, allowing for pain-free procedures.
