Juan Diego and his wife, Maria Lucia, were among the very first converts to Catholicism after the arrival of the Franciscans in Mexico. They had pledged a life of celibacy. Soon after, Maria died and left Juan a widower. He made it a point to attend Mass and instructions at least twice per week and later received permission to receive communion 3 times per week. He was very devoted to the Eucharist.
