It depends on the country. In England and Wales, Australia, Canada and many US states (such as Pennsylvania), magistrates are local judges who deal with minor criminal and civil cases.

In India and Pakistan, by contrast, District Magistrates (also known as Deputy Commissioners or District Collectors) are local executive-branch officials in charge of local administration and collecting taxes.
