How was slavery so painful?

slavery was painful physically and emotionally for the slaves. They would do backbreaking work in the hot sun all day for absolutely nothing, except for their master's gain. I'm sure that there was emotional pain as well, knowing that you would probably be doing the same thing for the rest of your life.
