A Server in a networked environment is of immense use. It not only backs up all the files at regular intervals, but gives data the utmost security. Unauthorised access to systems is prohibited by the Server and the centralised storage of data allows people to access it only if they have the right to do so. There are various types of Server, like File Servers, Mail Servers, Web Servers, Telephone or Fax Servers,Print Servers and, based on those, different functions are executed. A Server provides the maximum security to any user or file and, without proper authentication, no one can access the data.

A mail server is a computer that serves as an electronic post office for email. Mail exchanged across networks is passed between mail servers that run specially designed software. This software is built around agreed-upon, standardized protocols for handling mail messages and the graphics they might contain.

simply control the transfer of emails within a network through different protocols.
