Sheikh Al Maktoum is the ruler of Dubai. He became the Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates on 2006 January 11 after his elder brother and preceding Prime Minister Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum passed away.

The position of Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates is officially selected by the Council of Ministers, but is by tradition the ruler of Dubai. This position also acts as the Vice President of the United Arab Emirates, though the first prime minister did not also take this position.
