Why you use an AC voltage in nematic liquid crystal?

Liquid crystal displays should be driven with an alternating drive voltage to avoid biasing the crystal. If driven with a DC signal, the crystal will remain twisted. This will effectively reduce the contrast that is possible to achieve, as well as leaving an afterimage on the display.
