An echidna is a spiny monotreme, a group of egg-laying mammals found primarily in Australia and New Guinea. Known for their distinctive spines and snouts, they are one of only five existing species of monotremes, the other being the platypus. Echidnas are mostly insectivorous, feeding on ants and termites, and have a unique adaptation of a long, sticky tongue to capture their prey. They are also known for their ability to burrow and their solitary nature.
