How did people on the north and south react to the draft laws?

In April 1862, the Confederacy passed a law requiring white men between ages 18 and 35 to serve in the military for three years. However, wealthy people could escape the fighting by paying money. They could pay $300 dollars or not fight if they had lots of slaves.
