Is a hibiscus leaf a single leaf or a compound leaf?

An Hydrangea leaf is opposite, simple, serrate, oval to ovate, heart-shaped base, long petiole, 2 to 4 inches long, thickened and coarse feeling, dark green above, paler below. The flowers are white, very showy, fragrant, and appearing in late early summer.
