My hair is wavy , it always wants to take to the wave instead of the scrunch I want it to but I've found a really good way to scrunch it. My Hair is about shoulder length, or a little shorter, which if you want more curl I advise you get your hair cut somewhat short, like where your armpit starts. With short hair curls are intensifyed .I start off by using Fructis long and strong shampoo, personally I think Fructis is the best product. Once I shampoo and condition my hair I towel dry slightly, and scrunch wihtout gel. Then I add some gel, first a volumizing, then a scrunching gel. (Mouse makes hair lighter and is best used with thin hair, but I do believe gel works much better at getting the wet scrunched look, and holding in the curls).

I brush that through my hair to even it out, then wrap in a really thin towel, reallly tight, for about 5min. After that I take it down and scrunch in small handfulls and in many layers to get extra volume, and curls. I use a lot of gel but mainly on the ends and middles. After I finish scrunching it I take my defuser on low power and dry in really small sections, also while each small section is at the root I spray it with hair spray to A. set the gel and B. hold the scrunch. After I finish almost completely drying it, but still leaving it somewhat damp, I flip my head up and scrunch with scrunching spray, twirling pieces that are sticking out and spraying them down. Then once I finally get it perfect i spray it down in hair spray, lightly though, so it doesn't get so Hard, I pin it back or do a deep part, or any other style, then I spray and let it dry the rest of the way to give it that wet look. Then Wala! you have a cute volumized, curly scrunch!

Even if your hair is straight this will work, straight hair does scrunch espeacially better than wavy, believe me I'm a hairdresser/beautition and my best friend loves my hair when I scrunch it ,so one time I did hers (who's hair is completely flat out thin and straight) and it got lots of curls and volume she loved it and now Im stuck doing it almost every day along with other customers.

Section off your hair at the nape of your hair when it is wet, clip the rest up out of your way. Take an inch section of this hair and scrunch it in your hand. Pull at the roots with your fingers all the time have the blow dryer on it. When you have the roots dry, dry the rest of the length while scrunching it in your hand. Then take another inch section and do the same. When you have all at the nape of your head (just above your neck) take the another section above this and do the same. Repeat all this until your hair is dry.

This is how you can scrunch your hair but when it is dry, and straighten your hair. Here are the steps:

1. curl your hair (if it's straight) and make sure the curls are small and like spiral curls

2. once you are done curling, get hair spray and spray all over your head, making sure you spray everywhere.

3. get some kind of holding gel (not the blue sticky kind that makes your hair spikey)

4. rub the gel (or mousse) all over your hands and scrunch your hair with it and you will get a scrunched look in your hair and keep doing the same motion for about 3 minutes. :)

5. after scrunching make sure your hair is hard (as in it would be when your hair would be wet and you put mousse in it)

6. get a blow dryer and blow all around your hair (DO NOT COMB OUT) just blow to make sure it will hold

7. and that is it ! :D its quick and easy. and is a great look for African American people that do not have perms and still can get the scrunched look WITHOUT wetting your hair and it going natural again. :) and also for anyone that's on the run

TIPS FOR MAKING THE PROCESS GO FASTER

1. if you are in a rush and don't have time to curl your hair, try to do it over night and spray your hair at night. then put rollers in so the curl will stay in place and no curling will have to be done in the morning.

2.Have fun with it and don't make it hard to do and just think of your own styles with the scrunched look!

NEW ANSWER:

The above answer is very descriptive and thought out, but I have a much simpler way of scrunching my hair.

1. Get your hair completely wet. (Out of the shower)

2. Get all the tangles out.

3. Split hair into 2 sections: A top section and a bottom section.

4. Put a palm full of mousse on your hand and brush your fingers through the bottom half of hair. (Repeat on the top half)

5. Let hair down.

6. Split hair into 2 parts again. (Right and left)

7. On one of the sides, act like you're making a high pigtail on the side of your head. Make a mess of the pigtail (make it kind of a messy bun) and hold it with your hand. (DON'T SECURE WITH CLIPS OR HAIR TIES)

8. Use a blow dryer and dry that side for about 5-8 mins. Don't dry it all the way. (Repeat steps 7 and 8 on the other section of your hair.)

9. Both sides of your hair should be equally scrunchy. If one isn't, simply scrunch with your hand.

10. Use strong hold hair spray.

TIP: Don't blow dry too much or put your hands in your hair afterward too much, it causes frizz.

Good luck with scrunching your hair. Once you get the hang of it, it becomes really easy (:
