How does the same time next year end?

George (Alan Alda) tries to get Doris (Ellen Burstyn) to marry him by telling her that he would probably end up with someone else. She refuses, because she is already married, and he leaves, but comes right back and admits that he was just saying that and that he will be back every year, or "until our bones are too old to risk contact."
