Is there any justification for the massive state support for police service?

Are you seriously suggesting there might be an alternative? Police officers with begging boxes in shopping centres, perhaps? I don't know of any politician or philosopher, however much they deplore state (i.e. public) funding, who has suggested a privately-funded police service - along with the military, it is really one of the very few things that can hardly be farmed out to private or charity funding.
