The Buwayhids were a Shia Muslim dynasty that originated from the Daylam region of northern Iran in the 10th century. They gained prominence after seizing control of Baghdad in 945, effectively becoming the de facto rulers of the Abbasid Caliphate while allowing the caliphs to retain nominal authority. The Buwayhids are known for their patronage of the arts and architecture, as well as their role in the political fragmentation of the Islamic world during their reign, which lasted until the rise of the Seljuk Turks in the 11th century.
