Jefferson Davis was the President of the Confederate States of America for its entire duration during the Civil War (1861-1865). At first the Confederate Congress made Davis the provisional president and then within a year or so elected him as the permanent president. As an aside, the Confederate Constitution called for a president's term to be one of six years, with no reelection allowed. Davis had good qualifications. He had attended a good college, Transylvania and later graduated from West Point. He had also served for a time as the US Secretary of War.
