How does cutting of trees adds to environmental pollution?

Cutting down trees in itself doesn't cause pollution. Trees absorb C02 and release oxygen, so when it's cut down, it doesn't pollute- at least not right away. As the tree decays, it releases the C02 it has stored back into the atmosphere, inevitably causing pollution.
