What kind of struggles did Saint Valentine have?

We know very little about Valentine and much of what is written about him is legend. I would imagine it was a struggle for him to choose between obeying the law enforced by the emperor and keeping himself safe from persecution or following his conscience when he knew it could lead to torture and death. He chose the latter and was martyred because he broke the law that forbad him from marrying couples.
