Taking a crossection of a tree trunk, since trees grow progressively in concentic rings added to the outside, that part of the wood nearest the centre is the oldest. It is close grained and, because it is in the middle, is called heart wood.

The sap wood is the outer, newer layers which are of more open grain and softer.
