The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) was established on November 25, 2002, following the September 11 attacks. It officially joined the U.S. Cabinet when it was created as part of the Homeland Security Act of 2002, which aimed to consolidate various federal agencies and enhance national security efforts. The department became operational on March 1, 2003.
