When renting an apartment or home, there are many decisions that need to be made. Renters need to find a space that is in a convenient location, within their budget, and that seems like a comfortable place to call home. However, one of the most difficult decisions to make when renting a home is whether to live alone or begin the search for a roommate.
One of the biggest advantages to renting a home with a roommate is the increased rental options. Because the cost of the rental will be split by two or more people, renters will be able to afford a home that they would not necessarily be able to afford on their own. This increase in budget may allow roommates to rent a bigger and more luxurious home in a better or more convenient area. This advantage alone is what convinces many renters to live with a roommate.
However, a larger budget is not the only advantage of living with a roommate. Many renters simple enjoy the company that a roommate or several roommates provide. While the freedom of living alone may be alluring, the thought of coming home to an empty house or apartment everyday may not be. Renters that are moving to a new, unfamiliar area or that are leaving their parent’s home for the first time may want to seriously consider living with a roommate, as this may make adjusting to a new lifestyle much easier.
Unfortunately, there can also be disadvantages to renting a home with a roommate. These disadvantages usually stem from differences in lifestyles, cleanliness, or monetary disputes. This is why is it important to get to know a potential roommate’s lifestyle and habits before deciding to live with them.
Simply discussing pets, hobbies, sources of income, expectations, and interests before deciding to rent a home with a potential roommate can greatly increase the chances of a smooth cohabitation. In addition, it may be wise to seek separate leases if possible. While this may not always be possible, separate leases will make each party financially responsible for themselves and decrease the risk of monetary related arguments in the future. When renting a home, it is important to carefully weigh the advantages and disadvantages of living with a roommate before committing to cohabitation.
