Copywriting is 'marketing writing' as opposed to 'technical writing'. This means a lot more creative content and, very often, a tight and well-edited text. One of the problems with writing for commercial purposes (web sites, brochures etc) is that the wrong audience is being addressed. You find that the text talks much more to the client's interest than to the interest of the potential buyer or customer. The role of a skilled copywriter is to find the essential sales arguments and present them in an interesting way. Often, you'll find that the original text (in a non-English language, or even in English) has been poorly constructed. In this case, the copywriter has two tasks: a) Sorting out the key messages and b) Presenting them in the most attractive way. Very often, after a copywriting job, the client will take the English text and re-create new text in his or her native language - because it now does a much better communications job. So where do you look for good copywriting skills in English? One way of course is to type 'English copywriting' in a search engine and see the results. However you will get a lot of results and not know who to turn to. Another way is by personal recommendation, or by funding a good site or brochure and 'backtracking' to see who was the copywriter. A third way is via forums like these, getting text contributions from copywriters like me. I'm Mike Druttman, of FutureWeb.ws. Add the 'www' if you wish to visit me.
