In 1584 Ralegh and his investors sent two barks under the command of Philip Amadas and Arthur Barlowe to discover a suitable place for establishing a military bastion in the New World. There were no women involved in that voyage. In 1585 a second colony of 108 men were sent to establish a military settlement on Roanoke Island. Sir Richard Grenville was the leader. This voyage was also sponsored by Ralegh and his backers.

The 1587 colony consisted of men, women and boys. This voyage was not sponsored by Ralegh. He lent his name to it, but by 1587 his financial interest had waned.

The 1587 settlement was a failure and a foothold in the New World was not established until 20 years later in 1607 at Jamestown.
