There are several ways to open a car door without calling a locksmith. For instance, the old "clothshanger wire" trick will work for older vehicles with a traditional pop lock. Electronic switches are harder to open this way, which is why vehicle manufacturers have started adding "electronic pushkeys" to newer vehicles. If one gets locked out and there are no such tools available, AAA or other automotive services may be a less expensive alternative to a locksmith.
