What is dear diary in french?

Literally "dear diary" is translated "Cher journal". However, this is not used to make a diary entry. In French, one simply starts with a date and goes on with what needs to be said. Edit: I disagree with this answer. "Cher journal" is maybe a little bit old fashioned but still in use among diarists.
