No. At some point the management of US Steel reported a 60% rise in profits and then offered the employees a 30% pay rise. The labour unions however demanded a 60% pay rise. Management refused to budge on this (Carnegie at the time was in Scotland and communications and travel were infinitely slower than today) and the riots broke out in which the Pinkerton agents played such an infamous part.
Carnegie himself was a philantropist who spent great amounts of money on all kinds of charities. His Foundation is still very active in this field today.
