When did the Lincoln penny first appear?

The Lincoln penny first appeared in 1909 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth. It was designed by sculptor Victor D. Brenner and featured a profile of Lincoln on the obverse side and wheat ears on the reverse side. The Lincoln cent replaced the Indian Head cent in circulation and has since become one of the most iconic and widely collected coins in American numismatics.
