Hallways and stairways can present problems for new decorators. Use your knowledge of your own lifestyle and personal tastes to help guide you.

For a hallway on the ground level of a multi-person household with young or teenage children and a casual lifestyle, try a utilitarian approach. Spaces to hang coats, store book bags and tuck shoes/boots out of the way will reduce the clutter in this area.

For a hallway in the upper floor of an old family home, you might want to keep the paint light coloured as these areas sometimes can be dark. A "gallery" of family photos enhanced by good lighting would be suitable in this area.
