World War II wrought a horrendous cost on humanity: the infrastructure of much of Europe and Asia was thoroughly destroyed, and tens of millions, mostly civilians, died. The two nations who suffered most, the Soviet Union and China, each lost over 20 million people. German deaths numbered about 5.5 million while Japanese fatalities amounted to 3.1 million. Some countries, such as Poland and what is today Belarus, lost upwards of 20-25% of their entire population. During the Holocaust roughly two-thirds of the European Jewish population (about 9 million people as of 1939) were wiped out. Overall, between 55 and 75 million people died during the war, evenly split between Europe and Asia.
