Italian politcs after the war, was divisive and corrupt. There was a strong postwar communist insurgency that threatened democratic governments. The unions were firmly in the camp of the communists who were supported by the Soviet Union. The Democratic governments which were mostly led by Christian Democrats, were weak and needed minor parties to remain in power. The Christian Democrats received most of their support from the Roman Catholic Church and the Papacy. There were a lot of Italians that were upset over the fact that the church had done little to deter Hitler or Mussolini from causing war and misery on the people. The United States did what they could after the war to provide economic help to Italy. There has been over 40 governments that have ruled Italy since the end of the war.
