Why is tennis played?

As with any sport, individuals play what they enjoy; tennis enjoys the benefit of requiring no special clothing, need no other players to practice (i.e., players may practice their serve on an otherwise empty court, or hit against a flat backboard or similar surface), and need only one other player to play against.
