How did Samuel Tilden feel about slavery?

Though he wasn't an abolitionist pre-Civil War, he was against slavery. After the Civil War, he was an active abolitionist. (Why? I don't know. Slavery was gone, what was there to be against?) I remember reading this on Wikipedia a while ago, look it up!
