Does potato have a long a or short a?

Potato usually has a long A as in (puh-TAY-toh).

However, it is also pronounced with a short A as (puh-TAH-toh). This is, however, much rarer than the similar situation with "tomato" (tuh-may-toh, tuh-mah-toh).
