Where is the serial number on a 1978 Mercury 80 hp outboard motor?

the serial number is on a metal plate attached to the steering unit in front of the motor. I had the same question about a month ago when ordering parts. You might have to move some grime out of the way before you can see it though. I didnt even see it until I took something to scrap the grime off. Hope this helps.
