Why did they invent chopsticks?

The invention of chopsticks is believed to have happened in China. The cooks would removed the food from a fire using sticks. Later on, people started to cut food into smaller peices to save on cooking time and fuel. As a result, there was no need for knives during the eating process. So, they weren't there.
