What prompted the war between the Vietminh and the French?

Vietnam (a country within Indochina) was a French colony (just as the United States had been a colony of Great Britain). During WWII, Japan occupied French Indochina. When Japan surrendered, ending WWII; France returned to her former colony. Vietnam resisted the move, and war ensued from 1946 until 1954.
