Most sources don't point out the exact number but the most famous Mexican fighting unit in the military that was sent to fight against the Axis powers was the Escuadrón 201. It was an airborne unit also known as the Aztec Eagles. It was composed of more than 300 Mexican volunteers, 30 of whom were experienced pilots.

On July 24,1944 they left Mexico to arrive in Loredo, Texas on the 25th to go on to Randolph Field in San Antonio, where they underwent 3 months of training. In June 1945 the Escuadrón 201 served with the 310th fighter squadron, flying more than 90 combat missions, adding up to to more than 1,900 hours of flight time. Later, the Escuadrón 201 served with the 201st, in General Douglas MacArthur's command.
