Bursitis treatment usually involves natural treatment first, such as rest, ice, and an over-the-counter pain reliever, such as ibuprofen. If that doesn't work, a patient may be prescribed:

  1. Medication. If the inflammation in your bursa is caused by an infection, your doctor might prescribe an antibiotic.
  2. Therapy. Your doctor may recommend physical therapy or exercises to strengthen the muscles in the affected area to ease pain and prevent recurrence.
  3. Injections. Your doctor may inject a corticosteroid drug into the bursa to relieve inflammation in your shoulder or hip. This treatment generally brings rapid pain relief and, in many cases, one injection is all you need.
  4. Assisted device. Temporary use of a walking cane or other device will help relieve pressure on the affected area.
  5. Surgery. Sometimes an inflamed bursa must be surgically drained, but only rarely is surgical removal of the affected bursa necessary.
