Peripheral IV administration involves the insertion of a cannula or catheter into a small peripheral vein. It is most commonly used for hospitalized patients.

Peripheral IV administration is used for fluids with an osmolarity of less than 900 mOsm/L. Its risk is low but it is associated with a few complications such as phlebitis, pain, and infection.
