Hooker brought a massive army south, hoping to threaten Richmond or bring Lee to open battle where his vastly numerical superiority would crush the Confederates.
However, Lee sent Jackson's corps on a flank march, which hit Hooker's right flank like a thunderbolt, rolling the Union right up like a wet blanket. Hooker lost his nerve, and retreated.
