What happenes if you put regular dish detergent in the dishwasher?

It works without any difference that I could notice.

Addendum:It will depend on how much and what type you use. Most regular liquid dish detergents foam heavily with agitation. If this happens inside your dishwasher, the seal may leak. Dishwasher detergent (like laundry detergent) is formulated to be less sudsing. do not, however, make the mistake of using laundry detergent in your dishwasher.

You would actually be better off running the dishwasher without soap.
