The CD-RW has a crystalline layer for writing data on it,so when it needs to be formatted, the laser burns the whole crystalline layer.When the layer is heated above its melting temperature (around 600 degrees Celsius), it becomes a liquid; at its crystallization temperature (around 200 degrees Celsius), it turns into a solid.
