How many years were there before ad?

The acronyms ad (anno domini) or ce (common era) refer to the time since the birth of Christ. Before this there were billions of years.

Present estimates put the age of the earth at 4.54 billion years, plus or minus 45 million. The universe may be around 13.7 billion years old.
