Why did the Spaniards call the Kalianago Caribales?

"Caribales," which the Spanish used to call the Kalianago, a West Indian tribe who were said to eat human flesh, was a variant of Canibales, or cannibals. European explorers often used to name various indigenous groups for characterisitcs or behaviors they observed.
