What is the function of epiglottis during swallowing?

The epiglottis is a flap in the back of your throat that covers your trachea when you swallow, so as to protect your lungs from food particles and liquids.

Fun fact: infants have the ability to keep their epiglottis open while eating, and therefore breathe and swallow at the same time.
