Is it possible for humans to get all their energy needs met by using only renewable sources?

I think the best answer to this question given was in the movie Gandhi when the actor playing the part of Gandhi, Ben Kingsley, was asked if India would ever attain the same standard of living as the people in England. To paraphrase his answer; he said, it would take more resources that the earth can supply for that to become a reality.

The other question that comes to my mind is: if we had an unlimited amount of energy, how many resources would we use up, and would it be possible that we use up all resources and have nothing left, even if we had the energy to continue, all the raw materials would be gone.

I think this is what happened to Easter Island. The original inhabitants overpopulated and then consumed and destroyed all the resources on their island, and then they all but a few died of starvation.
