Yes, but fortunately, unlike accused witches (who died as a direct result of being accused), everyone who has been publicly accused of being a vampire has already been dead when the official accusation was leveled. Some telltale signs that a deceased loved one was a vampire included: * A tilted or toppled headstone (due to rising nightly from the grave) * Hair and nail growth on the corpse * Pink, flushed skin * Apparent growth of teeth (due to recession of the gums after death) * Blood on or around the mouth of the corpse. The first sign invariably caused the townspeople to demand that the grave be dug up so that they could see the corpse to check for other symptoms, at least two of which were inevitably found. The unfortunate corpse would then be subjected to the indignity of being staked to the bottom of its coffin through the heart, and sometimes decapitated before being re-interred.
