Actually ear piercing originated with baptised sailors ( sailors who had sailed the seven seas and circled the Cape ) this was a sign to Neptune that this sailor was a baptised sailor and in the event of a disaster at sea, Neptune was asked to protect and guide this sailor to safety. The origin is the advent of sailing ships and it was adopted by the British Royal Navy. During the Second world war the Royal Navy's (British and Commonwealth countries) were the only military service that allowed it's able bodied sailors to have ear piercings for that reason. This belief is hundreds of years old and never questioned by any devote sea fairing person.
