As a single person you are entitled to the single compensation rate. When you marry you get the "with spouse" rate. Add children and the amount goes up. This applies to 30% and above ratings. You have to be sure to notify the VA whenever there is a change and provide marriage, divorce, death or birth records.

The VA will go back as far as necessary if you turn in the documentation and the event was some time ago.
