In was reported that the earthquake off Japan was followed by a series of intense aftershocks. The largest earthquake at the time had a magnitude of 9.0 (earlier reported as 8.9) and caused the 23-foot (or 7 meter) tsunami.
- Following those events were 200+ earthquakes on March 11 alone with magnitudes between 3.9 and 7.9 according to USGS data
- Of these aftershocks, over 24 were larger than the earthquake that devastated New Zealand on Feb 22nd (2011) which was the country's worst natural disaster since 1931
- Early on Saturday, March 12, an additional magnitude 6.2 earthquake hit Japan at its central region on the west coast of Honshu.
- On Tuesday, March 15 there was a magnitude 6.2 earthquake in central Japan immediately near Mt. Fuji, which is an active volcano.
