What did Valentine's Day originally celebrate?

Valentine's Day began in Rome to honor Juno the goddess of women and marriage. The pope in496 declared the day in the memory of St. Valentine who helped marry people and was executed in 270 AD. At first it wasn't a day for romantic love, but in England in the 14th century it was associated with love.
